Photos of Columbia's Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

Photo of the MLK memorial before restoration.

This is a photo of the Memorial before any Restoration work began. Notice the blue tiles that line the amphitheater. Although this photo does not show the detail, the tiles had a layer of calcium carbonate hiding their beautiful blue color. The columns on top of the Memorial are each inscribed with a quote from Dr. King.

Photo of the MLK memorial after restoration.

This photo was taken after the restoration began in April 2004. Notice that all the blue tiles have been removed and one granite paver has been removed. All the blue tiles have been disposed of and will be replaced with new tiles. The center section of the Memorial will be replaced and tested over the next year to determine a long-term solution to the problems of the Memorial.

After the granite pavers were replaced and the Laticrete system installed, new blue tiles were installed. The Laticrete system is the grouting that should work to draw water away from the Memorial. A French drain was installed in the back of the amphitheater to remove water.

The aerial view of the Memorial shows its manicured landscaping and beautful planting beds. The Memorial is the site of a number of weddings and special events each year.
